Zinc Flake Coating for specific applications by BENSELER

Zinc Flake Systems

Zinc Flake Coating has been an essential part of the BENSELER portfolio in the area of surface finishing for many years. Are you looking for high-performance corrosion protection for special requirements, for example very high corrosion resistance, UV resistance or screw connection properties adapted to the application? Then the specialists at BENSELER are the right people for you!

Find out more about the advantages of zinc flake coating for specific applications below.

What is the Zinc Flake Coating for specific applications?

The Zinc Flake Coating is a high-performance corrosion protection system for components with special requirements. Whether complex geometric parts, small bolts with washers or internal attacks as well as hollow or scoop components - many things can be coated with this surface. BENSELER coating systems from a wide range of manufacturers can be used. The zinc flake systems are based on water or solvents and consist of a baked film of zinc and aluminum flakes, which are connected by a predominantly inorganic matrix.

Zinc Flake Coating: Basecoat and drying

As a basecoat, BENSELER generally applies a coating with a high proportion of zinc and aluminum flakes. During drying, the zinc flake layer forms a conductive connection between the metal pigments and the substrate. This layer protects the underlying metal from environmental influences and corrosion; the cathodic protection mechanism of the zinc and the targeted passivation of the flakes in the layer play a significant role in this.

High corrosion protection for specific requirements

In addition to corrosion protection, the Zinc Flake Coatings meet other, often very specific requirements and can enable various characteristics, especially in combination with coordinated topcoats from different manufacturers: For example, friction values for threaded parts can be precisely adjusted or a certain color finish can be achieved.

Application techniques for Zinc Flake Coating

BENSELER applies the coating systems using various techniques. Depending on the requirements and weight of the items, it is possible to apply bulk goods using the dip-spin technique or in racks.

Zinc Flake Coating process for bulk goods

Zinc Flake Coating of bulk goods using dip-spin technology is carried out in automated large-scale production systems, usually "inline" via pre-treatment and coating lines with a base and top coat system.

In these large-scale production systems, the quantities - divided into batches per customer order - are transported automatically in a basket and tray system via multiple transfer processes. BENSELER pays attention to the lowest possible drop heights and gentle handling of the parts (soft handling).

Applications of Zinc Flake Coating

Zinc Flake Coating is mainly used in the automotive industry, but also in other sectors such as mechanical engineering, renewable energies, railroad technology, the construction industry and agricultural machinery construction. It is mainly used where a high level of corrosion protection is combined with other characteristics, such as certain coefficients of friction or individual colors.

Application examples include:

• Fasteners, washers, clips and different
• Sheet metal screws for the body cover in passenger cars
• Drive flange axle drive for SUVs
• Wheel bolts for trucks and trailers
• Nuts for wheel bolting in trucks and trailers
• Various parts in the steering train for cars
